Feeding the Soul
The aromas of basil, oregano, and bay leaf fill the air. I carefully taste my rustic tomato sauce spooned straight from the pan. Flavors of tanginess and sweetness satisfy my taste buds. I pour the flour onto my workstation, and an instant swirl of powder releases into the air, dusting my face. With precision, I form the flour into a nest. I tap the eggs against the edge of the metal bowl; each crack creates a clean break as they open. The yolks slowly seep into the flour. I pinch the salt between my thumb and pointer finger, ensuring even distribution. The dry and wet ingredients form a tough dough from which delicate strands of angel hair pasta emerge. The pasta is perfectly cooked to al dente. I yell, "It's ready!" My brother Jack runs to the kitchen and grabs the biggest bowl. One by one, my family spoons the vibrant, smooth sauce onto their pasta. We sit around a table face to face. Hours feel like minutes as we gather and share. Conversations of love, joy, and gratitude are felt. We are nourished by the food and the words said. This is why I cook.
Authors Note: I am inspired by how sharing food around a table reflects how we share our love with Jesus. Some of the most meaningful and memorable conversations happen when we sit at a table and share a meal. Cooking has always been a way for me to destress while being creative. Transferring the bare minimum ingredients into flavorful dishes and feeding them to loved ones brings me joy and happiness. I hope you leave feeling hungry and inspired to get in the kitchen and share a meal with those you care about!
